Carroll County sheriff sues county for more officers

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Carroll County Sheriff Bendell Bartholomew has gone to court when the County Commission declined to approve the increase he asked for to fund more deputies and new patrol cars.

County Mayor Kenny McBride says the sheriff's requests would cost taxpayers about $1.3 million. The mayor says such spending would push Carroll County's $1 per $100 dollars value property tax up by 43 cents.

McBride says he was served with the suit on August 31st and the county attorney is expected to file a response in Circuit Court.

Bartholomew's lawyer says the sheriff needs nine more deputies and a couple of more investigators. The 16 vehicles the lawsuit asks include a Ford Expedition SUV for Bartholomew.
