LAMBUTH ANNOUNCES PLAN TO MOVE FORWARD

Jackson, Tennessee, November 15, 2008:

Lambuth University’s executive board of trustees met Friday, November 14, 2008, to discuss plans for the future of the institution, including a possible interim president and an immediate campaign initiation.

The executive board will recommend Dr. Jerry Israel as the interim president for the institution at next week’s full board meeting. Israel is President Emeritus of the University of Indianapolis and a Senior Consulting Strategist for higher education institutions. Should the Lambuth board approve Israel as the interim president, he will bring much experience and leadership to work through the recent obstacles that the University faces. The candidate will return to Lambuth’s campus this week.

“He [Israel] attended the executive board meeting yesterday,” said Dr. Mary Cay Koen, Chairperson of Lambuth’s board of trustees. “He seems very excited at the possibility of working with us through our challenges. He is an experienced university president with a proven record of success, and we would be honored to gain his leadership.”

Named President Emeritus of the University of Indianapolis, Israel has served as president of the University of Indianapolis and Morningside College in Iowa. In addition, he has worked with several other higher education institutions throughout the country. As a Senior Consulting Strategist, Israel is part of a Work Out Presidents group and has a proven track record in overcoming the challenges that many higher education institutions face.

The Lambuth executive board has also initiated a plan for an immediate campaign to raise funds for the University. There has never been a more dedicated group of people focusing on the success of Lambuth’s future, as there is at this time. In addition, the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry is taking a very active role in assisting the Institution. This immediate campaign will be carried out through the end of the school year.

“We are excited at the possibility of enlisting Dr. Israel as our interim president,” said Acting President Dr. Charles Mayo. “The University has a plan in place, and we look forward to succeeding in our business of education. We have been educating students for 165 years, and we intend to continue to do so for many more.”

The Lambuth University board of trustees is cautiously optimistic about the institution’s future. There is a vote of confidence from the student body, as a large number have already re-enrolled for next semester.

“There have been no discussions or plans to close the university by the board or the faculty,” said Mayo. “With the potential for new expertise and leadership and with the initiation of an immediate fund raising campaign, we are in good hands.”

Four presidents of larger higher education institutions were present in Friday’s board meeting, and they brought much insight, expertise and background to the matters discussed. Lambuth’s board of trustees, alumni and the United Methodist churches are also stepping up like never before.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will visit the University November 17-19 to perform a routine review of the Institution. Lambuth has chosen critical thinking and the slogan, “Made to Think,” as the focus for their Quality Enhancement Plan. This long-term plan is designed to enhance the quality of student learning on campus. Koen expressed that she and the University are not the least bit worried about their accreditation.

Lambuth University is affiliated with the United Methodist church and was founded in 1843. In the ensuing years, Lambuth has earned a reputation as one of the South’s premier liberal arts universities and has received national recognition as one of the nation’s Top 250 Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report and as one of the nation’s “Top 100 Outstanding Colleges” by The Washington Post.
